FIRE PROTECTION FOR STEEL STRUCTURES

Although steel is a non-flammable material, it can lose its load-bearing capacity within minutes after the breakout of a fire. To prevent this, engineers use fire protections to give steel structures required fire resistance. The fire-proofing of a steel structure consists of application of a refractory lining that retards the buildup of temperature in the protected component, which delays achievement of the critical temperature and the resulting loss of strength.
