FIRE PROTECTION FOR FERROCONCRETE STRUCTURES

Ferroconcrete structures of buildings have to meet fire-resistance requirements defined for specific building components.

During a fire, pieces of ferroconcrete exposed to heat can crack and chip off, which can weaken, or lead to permeation of combustion gases through, the structure. It is often the case that the fire safety specifications for a building are modified as a result of change of the purpose of the building. Then, fire resistance of the existing ferroconcrete structures has to be improved. The fire-proofing of such a structure consists of application of a refractory lining that retards the buildup of temperature in the protected component.
